Creating a gallery wall can seem like a daunting task. What if you get it wrong and end up with holes in the walls where you don’t want them? Well it doesn’t have to have to be that complicated; you could just pick some of your favourite prints and frames and line them up against a wall on a shelf or a side board. Or you could hang your family snaps from a photo ‘washing line’ so that you can change the look whenever the mood takes you.
If you are keen to create that perfect gallery wall look then I have a few tips to get you started.
- Considering your wall colour is important to make sure the artwork pops. White works best as a background colour but other colours can work too if considered properly. Either decide what colour to paint your wall once you have collected your gallery or if you are already committed to your wall colour then choose your art accordingly.
- Collect all your art before you commit, whether that is a gallery of family shots or a collection of famous art prints. It might help to create a theme, such as memorable holidays or art works in a colour that suit the room you will hang them in.
- Mix and match, not only the size of your art, but the frames style and colours, just make sure the frames work with your art or images. So for example, if using contemporary art pick a modern simple frame. If you are mixing and matching size or style pick your key piece first be it the biggest or the most striking and make it the first print to be hung, and build everything else around this.
- If you do decide to mix styles of images then make sure there is a link such as colour so that there is some balance and harmony between the pieces.
- And finally if you are choosing to hang your pieces then lay them out on the floor first and take photos of them so you can work out which layout works best before you commit to hanging them.
