Are you scared of artificial intelligence or are you embracing it?
I am sure I am not the only interior designer out there wondering how AI is going to work in our industry and the use of AI is definitely a trend for 2024.
But how is it going to work in reality? Is AI going to leave you without the need for an interior designer?
AI has the potential to enhance and streamline various aspects of interior design, and speed up the design process but it’s unlikely to replace human designers entirely. A collaboration between AI and human designers is likely to produce the best results.
Here’s why a collaboration between AI and interior designers could be beneficial:
- Creativity and personalisation – AI can analyse vast amounts of data to identify trends and patterns, but human designers bring creativity, intuition, and a personal touch to create unique and personalised spaces. Collaboration allows the best of both worlds.
- Client interaction – Interior design involves understanding a client’s preferences, lifestyle, and emotions. AI may struggle to replace the empathy and nuanced understanding that human designers bring when interacting with clients.
- Adaptability – Human designers can adapt to unexpected challenges, incorporate client feedback in real-time, and navigate complex and evolving project requirements. AI may lack the flexibility and adaptability that human intuition provides.
- Ethical and emotional considerations – Design decisions often involve ethical and emotional considerations that AI might not fully comprehend. Human designers can navigate these nuances and make ethical decisions that align with a client’s values.
- Innovation and inspiration – AI can assist in generating design ideas based on data, but human designers often bring innovation, inspiration, and the ability to think outside the box. The collaborative process allows designers to leverage AI insights for inspiration while infusing their unique perspectives.
- Hands-on expertise – Interior designers possess hands-on expertise in selecting materials, colours, and textures. While AI can assist in suggesting options, human designers bring a tactile understanding and sensory experience that enhances the overall design process.
Therefore I think the future likely involves a collaboration between AI and interior designers. AI can assist in data analysis, trend identification, and other analytical tasks, freeing up designers to focus on creativity, client relationships, and the artistry that makes each design unique. The synergy between AI and human designers has the potential to create more efficient and personalised design solutions.
